"The Diving Board? przywołuje echa najlepszych dokonań wokalisty z wczesnych lat 70-tych, a jednocześnie wyznacza nowy rozdział w jego karierze. Album dostępny w dwóch wersjach kompaktowych: standard (15 utworów) i deluxe (aż 19 utworów!) oraz na winylu. Do pisania nowych piosenek Elton John zaangażował swego długoletniego współpracownika, autora jednych z najlepszych swoich tekstów - Johna Taupina. Za produkcję płyty odpowiedzialny jest T-Bone Burnett. Utwory zostały nagrane przy minimalistycznym akompaniamencie z udziałem pierwszorzędnych muzyków - Doyle?a Bramhalla na gitarze, Raphaela Saadiqa na basie, Keefusa Ciancii na keyboardzie i Jaya Bellerose?a na perkusji. "Płyta powstała praktycznie na setkę. Tak zwykłem nagrywać i tak powstawał Elton John w 1970r., z orkiestrą na żywo.
